The Trump administration recently released plans to significantly reduce spending on the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and to privatize the Corporation for Public broadcasting. The federal funding currently allocated for these programs makes up a minuscule portion of the federal budget (~0.02%), so eliminating this funding would do nothing to balance the budget while doing great harm to public discourse.
National Public Radio - a continuing source of excellent journalism and support for local art in each community - would be one of the programs hit hardest. From NPR’s donation site: “The loss of federal funding would undermine the stations' ability to pay NPR for programming, thereby weakening the institution.Elimination of federal funding would result in fewer programs, less journalism—especially local journalism—and eventually the loss of public radio stations, particularly in rural and economically distressed communities.” You can provide support for your local NPR station for as little as $5 / month as a sustaining member.
